The Sundowns squad underwent substantial changes, fielding 11 new players following their recent CAF Champions League quarter-final first-leg encounter against Young Africans.
Early in the clash, Richards Bay opted for a defensive approach, absorbing pressure without allowing Sundowns to trouble goalkeeper Salim Magoola.
Despite the Natal Richboyz looking to exploit counterattacks, they failed to capitalise on half-chances, leading to a goalless first half.
Sundowns displayed promising gameplay early in the second half, with Gaston Sirino and Siphelele Mkhululise combining well to create opportunities, including a chance for Lebogang Maboe that narrowly missed.
Both teams made multiple substitutions in search of a breakthrough. However, it wasn't until the 86th minute that Sundowns registered their first shot on target, courtesy of Siyabonga Mabena's setup for Neo Maema, well-saved by Magoola.
The deadlock was finally broken when Sphelele Mkhulise's cross found Mendieta, who headed home the winning goal.
