Egypt, Al Ahly legend Ahmed Fathi retires

Ahmed Fathi, an icon of Egypt and Al Ahly, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39.

Regarded as one of Africa's finest full-backs, Fathi played a crucial role in Egypt's success, helping the national team secure three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles and lifting four CAF Champions League trophies with Al Ahly.

In addition to his defensive prowess, Fathi was capable of playing as a midfielder and had two stints in England, representing Sheffield United in the Premier League and Hull City in the Championship.

Pyramids FC confirmed Fathi's retirement following his contribution to the team's victory in the 2023/24 Egyptian Cup.

"The Joker. A legend of the Egyptian football legends. Ahmed Fathi hangs up his shoes after years of effort," read a statement from the club.

Throughout his illustrious career, Fathi also claimed 11 Egyptian Premier League titles and earned 136 caps for Egypt, scoring three goals in the process.
