Sebastian Kehl, the sporting director of Dortmund, has been engaged in negotiations with Can for several weeks, and it appears that they have made significant progress in reaching a deal.
While some details still need to be clarified, Dortmund hold an optimistic view that they are in the final stages of the agreement.
The duration of the contract remains unknown, but there are indications that Can could extend his stay until 2026.
Initially, it seemed unlikely that Can would continue at Dortmund beyond the expiration of his current contract.
However, his performance in the latter half of the season demonstrated his importance as a key player both on and off the pitch.
Edin Terzic, the Dortmund coach, has placed immense trust in the 29-year-old, to the extent that the club decided to cancel a potential transfer for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez.
Remaining at Dortmund also enhances Can's prospects of participating in the European Championships next summer, particularly since Germany's national team coach, Hansi Flick, has shown increasing faith in Can to occupy the midfield alongside Joshua Kimmich.
