Mitchell Stevens: Sticking to basics yields positive results

JVW coach Mitchell Stevens says putting less pressure on players and allowing them to play for enjoyment has yielded positive results in their last few matches.

JVW secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Richmond United at the University of Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Bedfordview-based outfit has enjoyed an unbeaten run in five games, with three wins and two draws.

Stevens says playing to tactics and sticking to basics - will see the team continuously collect maximum points.

"We have a methodology that football comes first and enjoyment comes first with playing. The physical, competitive, aggressive side is not the primary thing that we come with to the game,” Stevens said.

“What I like to come to the game with is, are we doing the fundamentals right? Are we playing to the tactic? and are we enjoying? If we are doing that then the results will come. It doesn't always work but what it does do, it creates a very positive environment for the girls to play in.

“It creates a very structured and organised and disciplined environment for the young players to come in and learn and get success and teaches them the most correct style of football which is more entertaining."

JVW’s season midfielder Nompumelo Nyandeni was very instrumental in their win against Richmond United, opening with a goal in the first half - making it her 5th goal of the season after rejoining the team in March.

Coach Stevens says Nyandeni’s return has helped the team with regaining stability.

"Whole preparation was dismantled in our first two games and it shocked the girls but we've come back nicely now. Mpumi coming back into the squad has helped with some stability. So, yes we are realistic but we are not overambitious."
