Manager Enzo Maresca confirmed the decision in his pre-match press conference, marking a turning point in what has been a challenging season for the young talent.
Acheampong, hailed as one of Chelsea's most promising young players, had been sidelined from both the first team and under-21 squad for nearly three months due to a contract dispute. The club had made it clear he would not feature unless he agreed to a new deal.
Despite the freeze-out, Acheampong managed one first-team appearance this season, coming on as a substitute during Chelsea's emphatic 5-0 Carabao Cup victory over Barrow in September.
Now, with his current contract running until June 2026, Chelsea are keen to secure a longer-term commitment from the defender, and negotiations are reportedly nearing a breakthrough.
Thursday's match in Kazakhstan represents an opportunity for Acheampong to make an impression.
"He is in the squad, yes, and is probably going to play from the start," he said when asked about Acheampong.
"For Josh, it is quite clear: The club love Josh, I love Josh, and we are trying to find an agreement with the player. We are close, we are almost there, but we will see."
With Chelsea fielding an inexperienced squad, including several debutants, Maresca's decision to start Acheampong reflects renewed faith in his potential.
Maresca described it as a "shame" that Acheampong's involvement with the first team has been limited, and the upcoming match could signal a fresh chapter for the talented defender.
