The match started with Pirates asserting their dominance, enjoying 64% possession in the first half but failing to break the deadlock.
Despite numerous attempts, both sides went into the break goalless, with Relebohile Mofokeng's creativity and passing being a key highlight for Pirates.
The second half came alive in the 55th minute when Monnapule Saleng finally put Pirates ahead, firing a left-footed shot into the top centre of the goal after being set up by Mofokeng.
Unfortunately, Saleng's afternoon ended early due to injury, with Karim Kimvuidi taking his place shortly after.
As the match wore on, Polokwane struggled to make any significant impact, and Pirates took full advantage.
Evidence Makgopa made an instant impression after being introduced in the 83rd minute.
He doubled the lead in the 85th minute, converting from close range to the bottom right corner.
Makgopa then sealed the victory in stoppage time with his second goal, expertly finishing from six yards out.
With this comprehensive win, Orlando Pirates climbed to the top of the league table on goal difference, boasting six points from their opening two games.
Polokwane City, meanwhile, will need to regroup after a tough outing.
