Ex-footballers on a mission to aid other less fortunate former players through matches

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs defender, Fabian McCarthy says they are on a mission to raise funds to help less fortunate and sick ex-footballers.

He says they will do this through a series of friendly matches – like the one they played recently in Botswana against the former professionals of that country.

Some of the South Africans who travelled for the game included, among others, Matthew Booth, Stanton Fredericks, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Morgan Gould, Lebogang Mokoena and Teko Modise. McCarthy explains.

"We played in Botswana as the legends again, clash of legends actually a second division where the Botswana legends are playing against the South African legends. This idea came about two years ago, we played last year and this year and last year six of the Botswana legends beneffitted, those that were in accidents or they can't work anymore but this year one of our own guys benefitted from it,” McCarthy said.

“We donated R20 000 to Patrick Mbuthu's Foundation because he's been struggling with his vision, eyesight, he only has 20% vision. We want to help and contribute towards him going to see a specialist and even if he had to go and get an operation but we want to make sure we give him the best or we contribute as much as we can."

The former Bafana Bafana player says while they are having fun and entertaining fans, the aim is to raise funds and contribute to the needy families.

"Some of us, 2000 Olympians are struggling with either illness or so. Coach Kenny Ndlazi, we just found out that he's sick, coach Shakes Mashaba did both his eyes from January to now at least successful operations. You know he was part of us in Botswana," he added.

"So, we're looking forward to do more of these games where we can use that money or gate takings to contribute to help any of our Olympians or the legends that are in need. Then we can contribute towards the health of the wellbeing of him and his family."
