McCarthy was one of the former professional footballers who paid their tribute at the memorial service held in Boksburg on Thursday.
Speaking to SABC Sport, McCarthy stated that he is grateful that Meiring who played with him at Moroka Swallows became a real asset to South African football.
“Alton was a unique striker. He had his very good strong points, but I must admit he was a lazy player at training, and never used to run. But come game time, he could be very composed, very clinical and knew which runs to make to get through defenders. The only thing was to kick him to get him out of the way, and yes he didn’t deserve to die like that. Thanks to the family for sharing his life with the rest of South Africa,’’ said McCarthy.
Meiring had earned his stripes as one of the prolific strikers, having played for few top clubs in South Africa - including Mamelodi Sundowns, Golden Arrows and Moroka Swallows.
McCarthy further thanked the Premier Soccer League for allowing a moment of silence in honor of Meiring’s contribution in football during the MTN8 Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium last Saturday.
“He played for so many teams, it is great to see what he has done. Setting an example for his boys. Thanks to the PSL for acknowledging him during the MTN8 final. He was indeed a great asset to South African Football,’’ added McCarthy.
The 48-year-old will be accompanied to final resting place this coming Saturday, with a send-off at his local church in Boksburg.
