Fadlu Davids’ big mission with Simba SC in the Ligi Kuu Bara and CAF Confed Cup

Following a promising start in the CAF Confederation Cup, Simba Sports Club head coach Fadlu Davids is now switching back his focus to the Ligi Kuu Bara (Tanzanian Premier League), where they are hoping to reclaim the top spot this coming weekend.

Simba are currently third on the log with 28 points from 11 matches, five points adrift of log leaders Azam but with four games in hand.

Fresh from a moral boosting 2-1 win over four-time CAF Confed Cup champions CS Sfaxien, they play bottom-placed KenGold at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam this afternoon, and Davids says they remain focused on their own race.

"Now, we switch our focus to the league, we've got four matches in this two-week period. It's 14 days, five matches including the one on Sunday. So, it's two days a match, two days a match and there's 12 points on offer before we switch back to CAF,” Davids said.

“So, we are playing right through this period now up until February, it's seven matches in the league and three matches in CAF up until the end of January.

“Beginning of Feb, Chan starts so we will be on a break, we won't play any matches in the month of Feb so we've got this block now, one and a half months to complete this amount of games and the target of course, maximum points.

Then of course we have three matches in the CAF Confederations to try to qualify out of the group stage into the quarterfinals. So, our immediate target now is the four matches and yes you talk about going back on top or having three games in hand, three games in hand is not guaranteed points but on the other hand not really too concerned and looking at the log every time and what's happening on the other side it's about us and it's about our process."

Simba’s strength in the last few months has also been their solid defense organization, which has seen them managing to keep clean sheets in their last five league matches. Davids says this talks to the overall structure of the team, not just the defensive zone only.

"In our last match against Sfaxien and now we are talking about the big club that has won this Confed Cup four times. Simba has a history of Champions League or Confed only reaching the quarterfinals you know, we have never gone further than the quarterfinals on both competitions,” he added.

“So, when we played a club like Sfaxien we allowed them a shot outside the box throughout 90 minutes. We gave them the goal when our defender passed the striker and then they scored.

“So, two shots on target throughout the entire match and that's all we allowed them, in the second half they never had a shot on target at all and that is the dominance we need to create.

“You talk about clean sheets, clean sheets can only be done, it's not having a good goalkeeper and a good defense but it starts from the front and if you have the ball and you lose the ball, can you win it from the opponents as quickly as possible."
