Federico Valverde rallies Real Madrid ahead of crucial Atalanta clash

Speaking ahead of their crucial Champions League clash with Atalanta today (Tuesday) at Gewiss Stadium, the Uruguayan midfielder admitted the psychological toll of recent setbacks.

"After San Mames, I struggled to sleep. I'm not used to these situations," Valverde confessed, referencing the error that led to defeat against Athletic Bilbao. "I told my wife I felt mentally drained, but she reminded me not to give in. She said, 'You're a captain, face it head-on.'"

Currently languishing in an uncharacteristic 24th position in the Champions League standings, Valverde acknowledged the team's unusual predicament. "It's tough because we're not used to this. We're always competing at the top," he said.

"But this is part of football. We need to stay calm, trust the process, and work hard to turn things around. Hopefully, by season's end, we'll celebrate titles."

Valverde emphasised the importance of responding decisively against Atalanta. "We're in unfamiliar territory, but the only way to improve is to give everything on the pitch," he explained.

"Defensive solidity and attacking efficiency are key. Atalanta's man-marking could play to our advantage with the players we have."

Reflecting on his error at San Mames, where the 26-year-old uncharacteristically made an error, which allowed Gorka Guruzeta to break through on goal and secure all three points for the home side, Valverde admitted it was a rare lapse in his career but vowed to learn from it. "These moments are part of football. The important thing is to move forward and set an example as a captain."

The return of Vinicius Junior, who has been recovering from injury, offers a much-needed boost. "Having him back is a joy. He brings energy, hunger, and quality," Valverde said, leaving the decision on the Brazilian's starting role to manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Despite the pressures of relentless fixtures, Valverde remains determined to lead by example. "It's an honour to wear this shirt. Even when I'm tired, I remind myself that I'm playing for the greatest club in the world," he concluded.
