Fernando Carro's Champions League dream for Bayer Leverkusen

Fernando Carro's Champions League dream for Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has revealed his "dream" of leading the Bundesliga club to victory in the UEFA Champions League.

Speaking on the Phrasenmaher podcast by Bild, the Spanish executive spoke candidly about his aspirations and the challenges ahead for the German side, widely known as "Die Werkself".

Carro reflected on past successes but was clear that his ultimate goal is still out of reach. "Many people tell me we can't surpass what we've already done with our unbeaten title run, the cup victory, and reaching the Europa League final," he said.

However, Carro reminded listeners of Bayer Leverkusen's appearance in the 2002 Champions League final, where they narrowly lost to Real Madrid 2-1 in Glasgow. "We've been there before," he added, hinting that another shot at European glory remains very much in the club's sights.

Reflecting on the decisions that have shaped his time at Bayer, Carro named the appointment of Simon Rolfes as sporting director in 2018 as one of his best moves. He credited Rolfes with helping drive the club forward under the guidance of then-general manager Rudi Voller.

Carro also shared an interesting anecdote involving Bayern Munich legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

When Bayer Leverkusen hired former Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso as head coach, Rummenigge was quick to congratulate him. "He called me and said, 'Fernando, you've made a great choice with Xabi. He's a smart guy, and he's learned from the best managers in the world. I wish you all the success!'" Carro recalled.

When asked about his relationship with Bayern Munich's current sporting director, Max Eberl, with whom he had clashed in the past during Eberl's time at Borussia Monchengladbach, Carro responded calmly. "We can still have tough negotiations and criticise each other, but we have a strong, resilient relationship. It's fine."

As for rumours of a potential future role at Bayern Munich, Carro dismissed the idea, saying, "I'm very happy where I am, and I'm not someone who feels the need to constantly change."

Carro's ambition to see Leverkusen lift the Champions League trophy remains a driving force as he continues to guide the club towards greater success.
