Feyenoord shock Bayern Munich with clinical Champions League display

In a stunning upset, Feyenoord outclassed Bayern Munich, securing a 3-0 victory in the UEFA Champions League, despite the Bavarians dominating possession and chance creation.

Bayern Munich, with their 32 shots on goal and nearly 70% possession, were expected to dominate.

However, it was Feyenoord who capitalized on their opportunities, scoring through Santiago Gimenez twice in the first half and a late goal by substitute Ayase Ueda.

Vincent Kompany, the Bayern coach, acknowledged the defeat, stating, "I have to be honest, Feyenoord deserved their win. They fought hard and ran."

He reflected on his team's performance, noting, "We had many chances. I felt we could have scored one, two or more goals. Feyenoord used their moments well."

The match began with a dramatic flair as pyrotechnics from the fans caused a five-minute delay. Once play resumed, Bayern tried to control the game but were caught off guard when Gimenez scored from a superb through ball by Gijs Smal.

Despite Bayern's attempts to respond, Feyenoord's goalkeeper Justin Bijlow was in top form, denying efforts from Kingsley Coman, Harry Kane, and Calvin Stengs.

The home side's efficiency was further highlighted when Gimenez converted a penalty just before halftime after Konrad Laimer fouled Stengs.

In the second half, Bayern introduced Leroy Sane to change the game's dynamics, but Feyenoord continued to defend resolutely, with David Hancko particularly impressive at the back.

The match's decisive moment came when Ueda scored Feyenoord's third, taking advantage of a well-executed advantage by referee François Letexier.

This defeat has significant implications for both teams. Feyenoord now sit in 11th place with 13 points, while Bayern have slipped to 15th with 12 points.

The top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16, with the next 16 entering a playoff.

Feyenoord will look to secure their progress when they travel to Lille next Wednesday, while Bayern will aim to recover at home against Slovan Bratislava on the same night.

Kompany concluded with a sober reflection on the game, "Individually and collectively it wasn't enough from our side today. We put the work in, we gave it our all, but the performance was not just good enough."
