Finidi George deserves to be given the Nigeria job, says Kenneth Omeruo

Kenneth Omeruo says Finidi George has done enough to earn himself the Nigeria head coach role on a permanent basis.

The 1994 Super Eagles Africa Cup of Nations winner was placed in temporary charge of his country for two recent international friendly matches following the exit of Jose Peseiro after the recently concluded continental competition where Nigeria ended as runners-up to hosts Ivory Coast.

Omeruo played in both games, a 2-1 win over Ghana and 2-0 defeat by Mali that were used as preparations for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin.

The 30-year-old Kasimpasa centre-back told BBC Sport Africa that George derserves to be given a chance.

He said: "One difference is he wants us to play good football and I like that.

"I actually think he knows what he is doing, and he deserves to be given the job.

"The training programs were very good and players were giving 100 percent in training.

"I think we played very good football [in the] second half (against Mali). We weren't waiting to be attacked. If we converted our chances, we could have done the job."

Speaking after the Mali game, George said: "I think it was just a few mistakes that cost us the match.

"It was not a bad game. Good intensity, we created a couple of chances, but didn't score. And in a game like this, if you make mistakes you will be punished.

"The positives are there for all to see. I am equally grateful for the opportunity to lead this amazing group and my country."

Also reportedly in contention for the job are Emmanuel Amuneke, Ndubuisi Egbo, Michael Nsien and Toni Conceicao.
