Germany still unbeaten in Nations League, Van Dijk sees red as Netherlands draw

Germany stayed top of Group 3 in League A of the UEFA Nations League on Friday, while second-placed Netherlands were held to a draw in Hungary.

Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-2 Germany

Germany secured a 2-1 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica, continuing their unbeaten start to this season's UEFA Nations League.

The star of the night was Deniz Undav, who scored a first-half brace to give Germany control of the match.

Undav opened the scoring after Florian Wirtz latched onto a lofted pass from Joshua Kimmich and set him up for a tidy finish.

Shortly thereafter, Undav doubled Germany's lead by turning in a well-placed cross from Maximilian Mittelstadt.

Undav came close to a hat-trick, but his third goal was disallowed by VAR for offside, as was a later strike by Serge Gnabry.

Bosnia had their chances, with Ermedin Demirovic hitting the bar just five minutes after Germany's first goal.

They eventually pulled one back through veteran forward Edin Dzeko, who scored from a Benjamin Tahirovic corner to make it 2-1.

Despite Bosnia's late push for an equaliser, Germany, under manager Julian Nagelsmann, held firm and strengthened their position at the top of Group A3.

Hungary 1-1 Netherlands

Hungary and the Netherlands played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw in their UEFA Nations League clash at the Puskas Arena.

Hungary took an early lead when Roland Sallai converted a well-placed cross from Zsolt Nagy in the first half.

The hosts almost doubled their advantage within the opening 20 minutes, but Sallai's shot from a Dominik Szoboszlai corner struck the post.

The Netherlands pressed for an equaliser, with Cody Gakpo testing Hungarian goalkeeper Denes Dibusz from an indirect free-kick inside the penalty area.

Hungarian defenders, however, stood firm despite growing pressure, while Dutch players Stefan de Vrij and Tijjani Reijnders also came close to scoring.

A turning point came in the 77th minute when Virgil van Dijk was sent off after receiving two yellow cards, the first for protesting a foul on Donyell Malen and the second for a challenge on Kevin Csoboth.

Despite being down to ten men, the Netherlands levelled the score in the 83rd minute when Denzel Dumfries, who took over as captain, headed home a Gakpo cross.

Van Dijk's red card means he will miss the Netherlands' next match against Germany, potentially benefitting Liverpool for their upcoming Premier League fixtures.
