Given Msimango embraces captaining Kaizer Chiefs during difficult times

Captaining Kaizer Chiefs during one of its most trying times is no child’s play but the current skipper Given Msimango says he’s been equal to the task because he’s faced more difficult days at his previous clubs.

Msimango was thrown to the lion’s den when handed a Chiefs captaincy armband - there hasn’t been a consistent leader in the team since Itumeleng Khune’s suspension and struggles for game time.

Msimango took over from Keagan Dolly and Yusuf Maart, and he looks like a future leader of this Chiefs team going forward.

The Brakpan-born centre-back says he’s equal to the task of leading AmaKhosi.

"It's a huge honour on it's own, I was honoured when I was given that responsibility by the club to wear the armband and lead the team. When you are surrounded by good individuals, good human beings and of course quality players that job becomes a much easier one but yeah for now I'm happy to lead the team and help the team whichever way I can," Msimango said.

"I've been in such [difficult] situations before honestly where things are not going well for a particular team, I think when Galaxy [TS Galaxy] was facing relegation at some point it was a very difficult point and I draw a character, a lot of strength from that period. Of course, now dawning it here at Chiefs as a much bigger club, it's a different feeling but I think I've had that experience with it and I know how to deal with. I know how to push the guys and try get the best out of them at training and on the pitch."

Ahead of tonight's crunch DStv Premiership clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, who are looking at lifting their record-extending seventh league title in a row and 17th overall championship title in the history of South African football, Msimango believes that victory over this all-conquering Brazilians team, will make Amakhosi fans believe in them again.

"Not to use the word redeem but I could say it's a match that will make a lot of supporters happy if we win. I think in terms of redeeming or putting the club back to where it ought to be, it's for us to win championships. To win championships you need to be consistent in winning your games. So, I think it's a step towards that, winning this game."
