Abafana Bes’thende narrowly beat Swallows FC 1-0 at Dobsonville Stadium on Friday night with the lone goal coming from on-song attacker Pule Mmodi.
But the style of play used by Vilakazi and his technical team was a deviation from their usual entertaining and front-foot approach.
"Definitely, I think our game today was different from all the games that we've played, and I must say that we are happy for the three points, that's what we wanted," Vilakazi told reporters.
"If you take a look at the second half, we even introduced a defender so that we can try to protect what we have because we are looking at the situation right now that, 'Ok, we've got a goal, so what is it that we can do?'
"Because they were playing long balls and relying on the second balls, so we added another defender to try to protect what we had, and I think it worked for us."
The win moved Arrows to 10th place on the DStv Premiership standings – an outcome Vilakazi insists is the main priority at this stage of the campaign.
"We've played so many games where we've played very well, but we never won [those] games. So, I cannot say I can falter the boys today, but I'm just happy for the commitment, hard work and making sure we grind for the result, which we got and that's what matters," he concluded.
