They stand on the brink of clinching their maiden Bundesliga title today (Saturday), without even kicking a ball. However, their fate hangs precariously on the outcomes of two crucial fixtures involving Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart.
Leading by a staggering 16 points over Bayern and Stuttgart with just six matches remaining, Leverkusen's title triumph seems inevitable.
Yet, the prospect of celebrating the triumph via television does not sit well with Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso.
"We don't want to dwell on possibilities too much. We will prepare for the match against Werder Bremen as usual. It would be a huge surprise if both our rivals lost. Normally, that doesn't happen. And to be honest, we would prefer to clinch it on the field," Alonso stated.
Leverkusen's only hope of being crowned champions today (Saturday) lies in Bayern and Stuttgart faltering. However, they might have to wait until Sunday to lift the trophy if they secure a victory against Werder Bremen at BayArena. Additionally, a draw between Bayern and Stuttgart would also be sufficient for Leverkusen to seal the deal.
Despite the allure of an imminent title, Alonso, who clinched three Bundesliga titles with Bayern as a player, remains grounded. "Of course, it's a special match, but fortunately, it's not our only chance to be champions. We approach the game with full respect. It's true that we are playing at home and we want to seize the first match point."
Alonso also cautions against premature celebrations, drawing parallels with Dortmund's last season's setback. "We are in a good position, but nothing can be taken for granted. We saw it last season with Dortmund," he warns, referring to Dortmund's draw with Mainz (2-2) when victory would have secured the title.
Looking ahead, Leverkusen aim for a historic treble: Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and the Europa League. Hence, the manager's nod to the fans when questioned about a potential pitch invasion: "They should celebrate massively. They deserve it... but we need the pitch. There are still matches to be played."
