Hugo Broos admits loss of hope in Bafana Bafana last-gasp win

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos insisted his side again caused problems for themselves, but expressed delight after securing the all-important victory over South Sudan.

Thalente Mbatha netted a 94th-minute stoppage-time winner after Bafana let slip a lead for the second successive 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Juba on Tuesday, and very nearly dropped four points in Group K.

Broos admitted he had lost hope of the victory as the clock wound down, as he grappled with the missed opportunities – particularly in the first half.

"I'm very happy that we could still win the game. Honestly, I didn't believe in it anymore because the problems we had was down to us," said Broos.

"I know this team of Sudan was playing with heart and dedication, and they have a lot of troublesome players when playing high balls, and our defence was not aggressive enough, so Sudan could come back at 2-2 and then it became very difficult for us.

"In the first half, we could have scored more – this is something we again didn't do [like in the game against Uganda], and the game could have been done after 45 minutes.

"But ok, we hit the post and whatever – those chances have to be goals, so again we put ourselves in problems today, but in the end it was a happy ending for us, and I'm very happy with it."
