Hugo Broos to ask SAFA for prominent friendly games

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says he wants high profile preparation matches next year to sharpen the team for FIFA World Cup qualifications.

South Africa face South Sudan at the Cape Town Stadium tonight having already confirmed their spot at the AFCON in Morocco next year.

Broos has an eye on the next major tournament in 2026, but argues he needs prominent friendly games.

"In March we have two qualifiers but then in June, there's friendly games. We have to pay attention, the Sundowns players will not be there, they are playing the World Cup of the clubs so it should be very bad that CAF or FIFA should organise qualifiers in June. Surely there will be friendly games and I want good opponents," Broos said.

Bafana have current log leaders Rwanda, Benin, Lesotho, Nigeria and Zimbabwe in their group for the global showpiece. The coach believes there will be a lot of mitigating factors in securing quality fixtures.

"I don't really believe that every team has already a friendly game for June. I think it's a little bit too soon but okay, now we'll start and look for opponents and see who's free and see who wants to come to South Africa or do we have to go to them,” the coach added.

“We will see now, there is enough time, there is six months and again I should be very, very surprised that all those teams have already accomplished their programs for June.

“I think there are many teams or many countries also who have to take part in that World Cup for clubs. Certainly, the players who are playing in Europe in all those different countries."
