I know what to expect, says Lebogang Mabatle after signing in Morocco

Former Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies defender, Lebogang Mabatle has signed a two-year contract with Moroccan side Wydad Athletic Club, joining the Women’s team where fellow South African Rhulani Mokwena is the head of the men’s side.

“It actually feels great and what makes it even more exciting is that we will see each other often and converse in South African languages,” said an excited Mabatle.

Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport from her new base in Morocco, the 32 year old says everything happened very fast and she is excited about what’s coming ahead.

“I was invited for medicals, and before I knew it I was offered a contract, signed and then was unveiled by the team. But I am happy with how things went and I will give my all the to the team,” she said.

“I feel good, and my greatest gratitude goes to Phoenix for opening the doors for me, and I will forever be grateful for giving me the opportunity.”

The South African was previously on the books of Phoenix Football Féminin Marrakech, in the Premier Division of Women’s Football.

“I have been in Morocco for a while but now it’s different cities and I think things will be much easier because I know the teams, I know how they play and even understand their fields. As much as most teams have reinforced and strengthened their squads, at least I know what to expect.”

Back in South Africa, the Mpumalanga-born player used to run out for the two Pretoria universities – Tuks and TUT.

She has represented South Africa 13 times.

In joining the women’s Wydad Athletic Club, Mabatle has added to the South African contingent that is at the team, led by Mokwena in the men’s side: Technical Director, Allan Freeze; Assistant Coach Sinethemba Badela; Fitness Trainer, Sibusiso Mahlangu Performance Analyst, Sibusiso Makitla and goalkeeper coach Sean Louw.
