“It’s down to quality not quantity,” says Truter on Sekhukhune squad

Sekhukhune United coach Brandon Truter has explained why the club has registered a 33-man squad for the new season.

Babina Noko last week confirmed the number publicly and it was met with mixed reviews – some arguing the team was bloated despite Truter bemoaning this very fact several months ago.

However, with Sekhukhune qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup, where they hope to go beyond the preliminary round, the coach’s tune changed.

"It will be down to quality, I think that's the word that I'm looking for, quality not quantity. Right now, we signed a lot of first division players but young players with a lot of potential and talent that need to be nurtured. Unfortunately, we are in the PSL, there's no time for development, you have to sink or swim," Truter said.

Sekhukhune will play their third match in a space of one week, which already speaks to the heavy load this season.

Truter hopes the players step up.

"Yes, we've loaned out a few but those that remain, there's something there and we are hoping that it will come out very, very soon. We had a very tough preseason, so the boys are well conditioned. It's about eliminating the overload, it's about managing the process, having the right protocols in place," Truter added.

The backroom personnel will also be asked to go beyond the call of duty, according to their leader in coach Truter.

"The staff are getting tested; we are getting tested this month. If we get it right and we make mistakes, we learn from it and grow from it but so far so good. The suspensions and the injuries that we currently have, it's things you plan for."
