Jan Oblak reflects on tough victory as Atletico prepare for Madrid Derby

Jan Oblak proved his worth as Atletico Madrid's saviour with two crucial saves in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo, securing all three points.

The Slovenian goalkeeper kept his side in the game with a brilliant first-half stop against Iago Aspas and another crucial intervention to deny Borja Iglesias in the second half.

The winning goal was scored in the 90th minute via Julian Alvarez.

Reflecting on the match, Oblak acknowledged the challenge posed by Celta, saying, "It was a complicated, difficult match. The three points were fundamental. What matters is the victory, even though our performance wasn't great.

"We struggled, but thankfully, we managed to win against a team that's doing well. Playing at home is always a bit tougher for us."

Atletico's narrow victory reminded fans of their familiar 1-0 winning formula from the past. Oblak noted, "We've won quite a few games 1-0 before, but some matches are more attractive to watch. At the end of the day, results are what matter in football.

"Of course, it's better if you play well, but nobody wants to watch beautiful football without winning. We took our chance when it came."

Looking ahead to their next match against Real Madrid on Sunday at Estadio Civitas Metropolitano, Oblak stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in a league dominated by heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona.

"You always have to win, especially in a league where Madrid and Barca almost never lose. To stay at the top, you have to collect points.

"The start is crucial. Hopefully, we can remain in this fight, unlike in previous years," he stated.

Oblak also touched on the upcoming derby, downplaying any favourites: "It's tough to say who's the favourite in a derby. Both teams will be searching for the win.

"We want the three points, just like them. It should be a good match, and hopefully, we'll be the ones celebrating at the end."

Finally, regarding the possible absence of Kylian Mbappe in future clashes, Oblak remarked, "I'm not sure if he'll play or not, but they've got plenty of talented players.

"Whoever plays will do well and aim to win, just as we do."

Atletico will aim to build on this hard-earned win, hoping to keep their momentum going as they prepare for a crucial week ahead.
