Jay-Jay Okocha: Africa no longer produces top players

African football icon Augustine "Jay-Jay" Okocha contends that the continent is currently not generating high-calibre players at the same level as during his playing career.

The former Super Eagles star believes contemporary African footballers lack the prowess and impact on match days that their predecessors once possessed.

Okocha, who plied his trade across various European clubs, including in England and Germany, has urged today’s footballers from the continent to intensify their dedication and exertion on the field.

"I believe we’re witnessing a decline in the distinctive African flair in football. Present-day players seem to be prioritising financial gains over on-field performances," Okocha told SABC Sport in an exclusive interview.

"The current trend places money at the forefront, with passion taking a back seat in today’s football landscape. We lack that essential element as a continent.

"By igniting our passion, there is a possibility of excelling in the World Cup and even securing the prestigious Best Player in the World award in the future.

"I have yet to witness a contemporary player who rivals those from the bygones era. This is why I emphasise the need for improvement starting with today’s local footballers."
