Jerry Tshabalala excited by Sundowns' Ladies USA tour

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies coach Jerry Tshabalala is excited about heading to the USA to play in The Women’s Cup to be held in Missouri later this year.

The treble champions will take on hosts Kansas City Current, who play in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), Vissel Kobe (J1 League, Japan) and Atletico Madrid (Liga F, Spain) in August.

Sundowns Ladies are the first African team invited to the prestigious inter-club tournament, currently in its third year, and Tshabalala says they are going there to learn different styles of play.

"It's exciting. When I heard about it, and I looked at the team that we are going to be up against – a team from Asia, a team from Europe, and a team from North America, and we are coming in as Africans," said Tshabalala.

"It's a good opportunity for us to go out there and test ourselves, and see how far we are in terms of football at club level [because] we've seen our national team competing against those continents, and how they've fared.

"This is an opportunity for us to go out there and showcase our talent, but to also learn from other diverse cultures and tactics from different teams, especially from Asia and North America, so we can maybe learn one or two things.

"Because the European teams we always see on TV, we watch them and [already] understand how they play."

Tshabalala, speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, also described their 6-0 demolition of First Touch Ladies in the Hollywoodbets Super League on Sunday as redemption following their 1-1 draw with JVW FC a week prior.

"We needed to redeem ourselves, although there's a lot of room for improvement, especially if you look in terms of how we started the game in the first half," he added.

"Our first half was a little bit poor, and I think we could have converted a couple of chances and gone into the second half leading 4-0 – and when you look at the goals that we scored, we didn't even create a single one – we got a soft penalty and an own goal, but we'll take those."
