Jonathan Tah voices concerns over Champions League format

Ahead of Bayer Leverkusen's Champions League clash with AC Milan, defender Jonathan Tah voiced concerns about the new tournament format, calling it a burden for players.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Monday, he echoed sentiments expressed by other players, including Manchester City's Rodri and Liverpool's Alisson Becker, about the heightened demands on athletes.

"I can agree with that," Tah remarked, addressing the growing concerns highlighted by players' union FIFPro regarding workload management.

"I do enjoy matches more than training, but it has to be curtailed at some point. We have to look at how much longer we can maintain our level with so many games.

"If the number of matches continues to rise, we will see an increase in injuries. This is an issue we cannot afford to ignore."

Despite these concerns, Tah emphasised his love for the game. "If I said I preferred training to matches, I'd be lying," he added.

Last season, Tah was a pivotal figure for Leverkusen, featuring in 48 competitive matches, with only Granit Xhaka and Alejandro surpassing his minutes on the pitch.

This season, he has yet to miss a competitive game for both club and country, underscoring his durability amidst the demanding schedule.
