Jose Riveiro revels in Orlando Pirates’ 'epic' Nedbank Cup triumph

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has described their Nedbank Cup campaign as an “epic” journey, culminating in the Buccaneers being crowned champions on Saturday night.

This followed their 2-1 win over Sekhukhune United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, where striker Terrence Dzvukamanja’s late goal guaranteed a second trophy of the season for the Soweto giants.

Riveiro, who joined the club in July last year and guided the Buccaneers to the MTN8 title in November, reflected on what was a tricky road to success.

"I think it was epic until the end, and it tastes very well [sic] because we probably didn't play very good football in this competition, but we were so, so competitive and that's very important," said Riveiro.

"I think we managed to win every knockout game in every competition during the season, and I think that's going to be of huge value for the group for the future.

"We had a difficult first game against All Stars FC, we managed to get the lead after 70 minutes, if I'm not wrong; I got a red card in that game," he recalled.

"Venda [Football] Academy was supposed to be an easy game after we took the lead, suddenly we shot ourselves in the foot and we played into extra time. Dondol Stars was something crazy. The game we played against Chiefs, a derby."
