Now in his third season at Pirates, Riveiro has started introducing more youngsters to the team than he’s done in the past.
There have been strong intentions from the goalkeeping department to the midfield and the attack.
Celta Vigo, Benni McCarthy’s former team, has a model for developing the club, and Riveiro says this also shaped his ideology, something that’s benefiting Pirates now.
"I guess, somehow, obviously I am the accumulation of experiences and spending time in my home club that is extremely academy-based in Spain. Somehow you learn not to be afraid of the moment that you recognise the talent even though we try to know when the player is ready to go, there's always a risk because they have to control a lot of things when they are going into the field, playing in Orlando," Riveiro said.
Following Mohau Nkota’s (19), brace this past weekend, the spotlight has been on the youth at Pirates, and he’s found his mate from the development team Relebohile Mofokeng (19) also on song in topflight football and now already a Bafana Bafana player.
Not since the days of Kostadin Papic, has there been such a promising conveyor belt from Bucs. Riveiro says the players deserve credit as well for responding accordingly.
"There's never gonna be a perfect moment to do it. There are always consequences when someone is playing for the first time. I think probably the group itself; the players are playing a bigger role than myself in the way that they are getting the new players and young players. How much they are taking care of them in the training, every day when we have the competition as well,” the coach added.
“So, I think together we are trying to make everybody feel comfortable because in the end, Nkota, Makhaula [Makhahlene], Sipho [Chaine], myself whoever is around, we all want to win and we make sure that everybody is trying to contribute."
