The versatile attacker, playing in a unique "hybrid" winger position, shared his thoughts on this tactical switch, while Dortmund's head coach, Edin Terzic, praised both Brandt and his team's recent success.
For the 27-year-old Brandt, this match marked a significant milestone in his career, as he celebrated his 300th appearance in the Bundesliga. Only two other players, Karl-Heinz Korbel of Eintracht Frankfurt and Eike Immel of VfB Stuttgart, achieved this feat at a younger age. Brandt, who had been inserted into the starting line-up following a victory over FC Union Berlin, proved his worth by netting the decisive goal in the 67th minute, securing Dortmund's fifth consecutive league win and elevating them to the top of the Bundesliga standings.
Brandt, who returned from international duty on a private jet with three of his Dortmund teammates, acknowledged his team's success, stating to DAZN after the match, "We've done relatively well, but I'll accordingly be quite happy to head to bed."
However, the spotlight shifted to Brandt's adaptation to his "hybrid" winger position, a tactical choice made by BVB coach Terzic. When asked about this positional shift, Brandt admitted that he preferred a more central attacking role but emphasized that his role was unique. "I interpret the position quite differently than classic wingers do," Brandt explained. "I try to move in as much as possible, and I think that fits in well with Marco [Reus]. It's a hybrid position, but I have a certain responsibility to bring the game width."
Brandt also noted the challenges of adapting to a new role, saying, "It's a blessing and a curse when you have a history on the wing, but it works out well if we keep moving. If we always swap out at the right moment to confuse the opponent and pull the rug out from underneath them, we'll score more goals."
Terzic, Dortmund's head coach, had high praise for Brandt's performance, referring to him as a "child of the Bundesliga" and expressing his enjoyment in working with the player daily. Terzic noted that Brandt had "refined his game successfully over the past few years." In addition to lauding Brandt, Terzic also shared his thoughts on the team's recent success. "We've taken 20 points from 24 possible recently," Terzic said, "and 66 points from the last 27 games. We've been working on reaching our goals. Less sexy football and more success. In recent times, we've played attractive football but didn't get the results. I think we've built up a good points total this autumn."
Dortmund's hard-fought victory and Julian Brandt's impressive adaptation to his "hybrid" role signal the club's strong intent to make their presence felt at the top of the Bundesliga.
