Wandile Duba and Ashley Du Preez were on the scoresheet for Amakhosi, who played most of the second half with 10 men after Reeve Frosler was shown a red card.
It was Chiefs' third win in six league matches this campaign and moves them up to six in the standings while Richards Bay remain 14th after their fifth defeat in eight games.
Amakhosi took the lead after 21 minutes when Duba found the back of the net after an inswinging cross from captain Yusuf Maart.
The Soweto giants had a glorious opportunity to double their lead soon after but defender Given Msimango headed wide with the goal at his mercy from a Frosler cross.
Richards Bay showed little going forward throughout the first half but should have equalised when Somila Ntsundwana was left unmarked in the box but put his effort over the cross-bar.
Chiefs were then reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Frosler was booked for the second time in the game by referee Cedric Muvhali after a boot in the face of Nkosikhona Ndaba.
The visitors still created little going forward even with a man advantage as Amakhosi controlled proceedings and effectively killed off the game with 20 minutes remaining as Du Preez scored.
Maart robbed Siyethemba Sithebe in midfield and fizzed a fine pass to Du Preez, the forward turning superbly before finishing past goalkeeper Ian Otieno.
Richards Bay pulled a goal back in stoppage-time when Yanele Mbuthuma headed home but Chiefs saw out the final minutes to take maximum points.
