Kaizer Chiefs edge Sundowns in dramatic shootout to lift Legends Cup

Kaizer Chiefs triumphed over Mamelodi Sundowns in a tense penalty shootout to claim the Home of Legends Cup at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday evening.

The clash ended goalless after 90 minutes, with the Soweto giants holding their nerve to win 5-4 in sudden death.

Chiefs made a few changes to their starting XI following their victory over Golden Arrows, with goalkeeper Brandon Peterson, Inacio Miguel, Dillon Solomons, and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo all earning starts.

Sundowns, determined to bounce back, included Lucas Ribeiro, Marcelo Allende, and Arthur Sales in their line-up.

The match began with Chiefs pressing early, coming close to opening the scoring when Miguel's header brushed the side-netting. Sundowns, however, weathered the storm, with goalkeeper Sanele Tshabalala making crucial saves, including a powerful effort from Solomons that he tipped away for a corner.

Both teams struggled to break the deadlock despite flashes of creativity.

Chiefs introduced Yusuf Maart for Mfundo Vilakazi, who had shone in their semi-final win, but chances remained scarce in a tightly contested second half.

As the clock ticked down, Sundowns gained momentum and rattled the post in a late attacking surge. However, the match remained goalless, setting up a dramatic penalty shootout.

Chiefs converted all five of their spot-kicks, with Peterson saving Sundowns' final effort in sudden death to secure the victory.

The win highlighted Chiefs' resilience and determination under pressure, as they celebrated lifting the Legends Cup in front of a jubilant crowd.
