Motaung, who turned 80 this year and was gifted R2-million by his fellow executive committee member and league chairman Irvin Khoza, was speaking this week on the sidelines of the National Soccer League [PSL trading name] elections.
Khoza was re-elected unopposed for another four-year term.
“Yes, obviously we have to be open to the young ones to take over because our time will come to an end – and there has to be a proper succession plan. It’s something that we obviously have to do together as a committee and see how best we can probably put certain things in place so that we are able to find a proper way forward,” Motaung responded.
The Chiefs boss, along with Khoza, Mato Madlala, Stan Matthews, Rejoice Simelane, Tim Sukazi, Jomo Biyela and Johnny Mokgaladi were voted by member clubs to be part of the Exco.
On the monetary gift from Khoza on the day, Motaung said he was moved and reminisced about how the two of them got the NSL off the ground.
“We’ve come a very long way. This league…we maneuvered and worked together as a team. Even when he was not the chairman of Pirates at the time, he was with us every time when we were fighting with SANFA, who wanted to run both amateur football and professional football,” said the Chiefs supremo.
“Our journey with the chairman has been exciting and very eye-opening. We went through quite a lot. It needs time for us to actually put something together, but we can write our own history ourselves and not wait for somebody to come write it for us. We need to write our history in terms of where we come from – this has been our lives through and through.”'
