The transfer has marked another chapter in what has been a challenging European journey for the Super Eagles striker.
Nwakali's early promise saw him join Arsenal in 2016, but he struggled to establish himself, despite loan spells at MVV Maastricht, VVV Venlo, and Porto B.
His time at Arsenal ended after three years without a breakthrough, prompting a move to Spain with Huesca.
Unfortunately, his stint there was marred by relegation in his debut season and a subsequent loan to Alcorcon.
Returning to Huesca for a third season, Nwakali, 26, found more playing time, but his fortunes took a downturn after the 2021 CAF Africa Cup of Nations, leading to his exit and a brief spell with Ponferradina.
Last season, he moved to Portugal's Chaves, where he made 33 appearances, contributing one goal and four assists. Despite his efforts, Chaves were relegated, and Nwakali's time at the club ended on a sour note after he was caught using his phone during a match, straining his relationship with the club.
Barnsley, who have been in League One since their relegation from the Championship in the 2021/22 season, announced Nwakali's signing on a three-year deal.
The forward is set to join the squad immediately after receiving clearance to play.
As Barnsley aim for promotion back to the Championship, Nwakali will be eager to make his mark and finally fulfil the potential that once saw him as one of Africa's brightest young talents.
