Despite making significant changes to their line-up, Leverkusen found themselves struggling in the first half against their opponents from Group H.
Qarabag seized the initiative with a goal from Yassine Benzia in the 30th minute, followed by another strike from Juninho just before half-time. Patrick Andrade's pinpoint pass set up Juninho's composed finish, leaving Leverkusen trailing 2-0 at the break.
However, Leverkusen's manager, Xabi Alonso, made decisive changes during half-time, introducing Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz. Wirtz's impact was immediate, as he swiftly reduced the deficit with a skilful lob over the Qarabag goalkeeper, Andrey Lunev.
Despite the rain pouring down, Qarabag remained dangerous on the counter-attack, but Leverkusen's goalkeeper, Matej Kovar, made a crucial save to keep his team in contention. With defeat looming, Leverkusen mounted a late surge, culminating in Patrik Schick's towering header from Robert Andrich's cross in the 92nd minute, salvaging a vital 2-2 draw for his side.
The result leaves the tie finely balanced as both teams look ahead to the second leg at the BayArena next week. Leverkusen's unbeaten streak remains intact, thanks to their never-say-die attitude and late-game heroics.
