The match took place at Signal Iduna Park, where a late goal from Serhou Guirassy proved decisive after St. Pauli had equalised.
Dortmund started strong, dominating possession early on. Striker Guirassy had an early chance in the sixth minute but fired wide following some clever play by Julian Brandt.
Despite their control, Dortmund struggled to break through St. Pauli's resolute defence. Ramy Bensebaini played a crucial role, thwarting a potential St. Pauli goal in the 16th minute with a timely tackle to deny Oladapo Afolayan after an errant back-pass from Emré Can.
The hosts finally found the net just before half-time when Bensebaini redeemed himself by heading in a Pascal Gross chip in the 43rd minute.
After the break, Dortmund's performance dipped again, with another shaky moment from Can almost allowing St. Pauli to level.
The visitors did equalise in the 78th minute through Eric Smith, whose powerful shot from outside the area beat Gregor Kobel, despite a hint of obstruction.
However, Dortmund responded swiftly, with Guirassy restoring their lead in the 82nd minute after a brilliant run and assist from substitute Jamie Gittens.
As the match drew to a close, St. Pauli's Adam Dzwigala missed a golden opportunity to level the scores once more, shooting over from close range in injury time.
Coach Nuri Sahin's side ultimately showcased their ability to grind out results, preserving their perfect home record against the visitors.
