Lebogang Phiri’s advice to striker Mothiba amidst PSL interest

With mounting interest in the PSL for out of contract Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba, a close friend has advised it’s too soon to return to SA.

French-based Lebogang Phiri believes the now former Strasbourg forward still has a lot to offer on the European stage instead of opting for a possible move to the domestic DStv Premiership, where he’s never played before.

Mothiba is a free agent at the moment, but Phiri told SABC Sport his countryman has unfinished business abroad.

''I take Lebo as my little brother, so I will never ill-advise him in his career. I believe Lebo is amongst the top strikers that we have in the country, on a good or a bad day - he is a very talented young boy, a very humble young boy, a very hardworking young boy,'' said Phiri.

The 28-year-old missed out on being part of the AFCON squad in January after a devastating injury ruled him out. Phiri says now that Mothiba has recovered he should forget about the recent setback.

''He belongs in Europe, it may not be now because of what has transpired, his injuries but he should never think of his injuries as something to make him give up on his dreams,'' added Phiri.

In recent interviews, Mothiba insisted that he’d not held talks with any PSL clubs as his focus remains on his recovery. According to Phiri, the striker has always wanted to rub shoulders with the best in the world.

Phiri, who is a year older than Mothiba, is adamant that if he had enough patience to deal with his ordeal in Turkey as well as similar stumbling blocks then the latter is even much stronger mentally.
