Goretzka, who had faced a challenging beginning to the season with sparse playing time, has now cemented his return to the Bayern squad. Scoring twice in the match, the 29-year-old central midfielder showcased his resilience and skill.
His performance came in his second start in three games since the new year, demonstrating the rewards of perseverance and professionalism.
Bayern's coach, Vincent Kompany, was effusive in his praise for Goretzka. "I think he showed that you always have to be professional in your situation," Kompany said to Sky Germany post-match.
He emphasized the broader lesson for players, noting, "It's not just Leon, it happens all the time in a squad or in a career. If you do your job and stay calm, your qualities always come to the fore. That's great for us."
Despite Bayern's dominance, with 25 shots compared to Wolfsburg's 7, the game was not without its tense moments. Mohamed Amoura's late goal in the 88th minute almost turned the game on its head.
However, Bayern managed to hold firm. "Sometimes you have to fight to the end and that's what we did," Kompany reflected, adding, "We defended well twice at the end and were always dangerous. It was a very, very important win."
Match Highlights:
20th minute: Goretzka opens the scoring with a long-range effort that hits the post before finding the net.
24th minute: Wolfsburg equalizes through Mohamed Amoura, showcasing their early threat.
39th minute: Michael Olise extends Bayern's lead with another long shot, demonstrating the team's attacking prowess.
62nd minute: Goretzka scores his second with a header, seemingly putting the game beyond doubt.
88th minute: Amoura scores again for Wolfsburg, setting up a dramatic finish.
On another note, there have been developments regarding Bayern's goalkeeping situation. Daniel Peretz, currently Bayern's backup goalkeeper, has reportedly declined a loan move to RC Lens.
Despite interest from the French club and Bayern's willingness to facilitate a temporary transfer, Peretz has decided to stay, according to Sky Germany.
Currently recovering from a kidney injury, Peretz had shone when deputizing for Manuel Neuer in December, which elevated his status within the team.
However, his position might be under scrutiny with Bayern's interest in signing Jonas Urbig from FC Koln this transfer window.
