Linda Mntambo brace sends Sekhukune United into Nedbank Cup quarters

Sekhukhune United are through to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup following their 2-1 victory over Milford FC Princess at Magogo Stadium in Durban on Sunday.

Conditions were heavy underfoot and both teams initially struggled to adjust to the slow conditions. It was Milford who enjoyed the brighter start, but Babina Noko got the first spoils.

Skipper Mntambo put the finishing touches on a move in the 25th minute, powering the ball home from close range.

Sekhukhune then doubled their advantage just eight minutes later. Vuyo Letlapa put the ball on the platter for Mntambo with a cutback and he guided the ball home.

Milford FC finally earned just reward for their endeavour on the cusp of the break. Menzi Chilli fired the ball into the back of the net from inside the six-yard box to keep the game alive.

Sekhukhune pressed in the second stanza and Mntambo almost got his hat-trick, but his shot was deflected.

With the Stallions kicking hard in the final quarter, Sekhukhune sent many behind the ball to hold the fort. Bhekhani Mthiyni had a chance in the 83rd minute when he found space at the edge of the box, but his powerful right foot effort crashed off the crossbar.

Ivorian-born stopper Bangara Sangare - who came on at half-time - was called upon on no less than four occasions in the closing stages as Sekhukhune closed out the victory.

The win earns the Limpopo franchise the unenviable task of facing African giants Mamelodi Sundowns in the last eight.
