After 29 matches, Lindelani Ladies are on 16 points, three behind City Lads but the latter has a superior goal difference (-23 for City Lads vs -41 for Lindelani), so victory for the KZN side in their last match against the University of Johannesburg next month will not be enough to save them.
The Durban outfit needed a win against UWC to keep alive their hopes of survival and were on the right track with the scores level at 1-1, but the Capetonians turned the tables in the second half with three goals to end their stay in the league.
Lindelani Ladies become the first team to be relegated after one season in topflight football since the start of the relegation/promotion system in the South African elite women’s football league in 2022. The Durban side gained promotion from the Sasol League at the end of last year, alongside the University of Fort Hare who are currently ninth on the table.
Lindelani Ladies are also the second team to get the drop this season, following in the footsteps of the Eastern Cape’s Thunderbirds Ladies.
The two teams to replace them will be decided in the coming week at the Sasol League National Championship taking place in Knysna, Western Cape.
Nine provincial winners from the Sasol League will go into battle for the title of national champions, with the top two finishers gaining promotion into the Hollywoodbets Super League.
Lindelani Ladies have won only five games in 29 outings, drawing one and losing 23. They scored 23 goals and conceded 64.
Over the years, Golden Ladies (North West), Tsunami Queens (Free State), Coal City Wizards (Mpumalanga) and Ma-Indies (Limpopo) suffered relegation from the women’s league.
