Liverpool continue fine form with thumping win over Ipswich Town

Liverpool maintained their lead at the top of the Premier League standings with a dominant 4-1 win over struggling Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The Reds began the day six points ahead of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. They have been the form side in the division all season, and that remained the case against Ipswich.

They went into the half-time break 3-0 up, with Dominik Szoboszlai opening the scoring, Mohamed Salah stretching his lead at the summit of the top scorers, and Cody Gakpo scoring just before the break.

Gakpo then netted a second in the 66th minute and it remained plain sailing for Liverpool beyond that point, with Arne Slot's side having the ball under their control for almost 75 per cent of the game.

Ipswich did get a consolation goal through Jacob Greaves in the 90th minute, and their support erupted at the site of a goal against the romping league leaders.

Manager Arne Slot praised the "almost perfect" performance from his side, particularly their strong start to the match.

"It's been a few times we have played a home game and conceded a goal at the start. Today is the way you want to start a game," he said.

"We were aggressive, dominant for 85 minutes, they had hardly been in our half.

"It is a counter-attacking threat with the wingers they have but we managed to control that so because of the amount of work we put in.

"At the end, we are all disappointed conceding from a corner, the first one this season, but for 85 minutes it was almost a perfect performance against a team that plays a low block.

"That's not always easy but the way we did it was really good."
