Mamelodi Sundowns chairman reiterates Champions League chase

Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Thlopane Motsepe has vowed to support coach Rulani Mokwena in improving the team with the CAF Champions League their benchmark.

The Brazilians officially celebrated clinching the DStv Premiership, their seventh title in a row, at Loftus Stadium on Saturday afternoon despite seeing their unbeaten run ended by the 1-0 defeat to Cape Town City.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Motsepe reiterated the ongoing pursuit to add another continental title to their inventory of achievements.

''We will always keep striving for the best, it is part of our DNA, it is our motto. The sky is the limit, if we don't have high hopes for ourselves, we are doing ourselves an injustice.

We are doing the players and the people that have been there before us an injustice, because now we find ourselves in a situation where we can compete, we are getting closer every year in the Champions League. So the ambition will always be - to try and go all the way to the end of the Champions League, and I believe we have the coach, the players and the technical staff and the supporters. The supporters are so important in Africa, and we can grow into the club we believe we can be,'' said Motsepe.

When there were suggestions Mokwena’s job was on the line after Downs were eliminated in the semifinals of the Champions League, the coach publicly stated he’d been backed by the chairman.

Motsepe spoke glowingly of Mokwena too.

''I am really trying not to smile and be professional because I am very fond of the coach as a human being and as a person. As a young leader in this country, he has put immense pressure on himself to deliver for this football club, the proof is in the way that we have been playing. Where he goes now in terms of next season, in terms of what he can do at this football club - it really is about his ambition for the team,'' added Motsepe.

Mokwena put pen to paper on a four-year contract in July last year to become the Sundowns sole head coach. Motsepe reflected on his spell so far.

''He does this with a technical team that supports him and with players that have such incredible character, charisma and drive. It truly is a team effort, but a year back when signed and where he is now, having not even lost a premier league match - it truly is inspiring and amazing,'' he concluded.

Just as Mokwena asked for time and “patience” following their Champions League exit, his boss has also now urged supporters to believe in that process.
