Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies can be challenged says TS Galaxy Queens coach

TS Galaxy Queens coach Sizwe Sibiya says Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies can be challenged but one has to be strategic about it.

The Brazilians have won the South African elite women’s football league since its inception, with other teams coming close only to capitulate in the final run-in.

The former TUT Ladies coach says aiming for Sundowns Ladies directly is risky, rather focus on getting points from the other teams first. After 12 outings, with a match in hand, Banyana ba Style top the Hollywoodbets Super League log standings on 31 points, level with the University of Johannesburg who have played one game more.

"I think the misconception that a lot of people make and it's not just here in Hollywoodbets it's football globally. You finish number four, you want to beat number one but number two and number three [are there]. Why don't you start beating number three so that you get to number three and then you beat number two you get to number two because I was even asking the players a question, I'm like 'If I'm occupying position three and then I outrun the person occupying position two, what position am I occupying now? Most of them are saying number first, I'm like how so. You just passed the number two, it means now you are occupying their position you know. You structure it like that," Sibiya said.

Sibiya says this season looks to be more competitive with not just two but more teams gunning for the top position, adding that the signs have always been there.

In 2021 TUT pushed Sundowns Ladies all the way, with UWC following suit in 2022 and 2023, now UJ is leading the charge in 2024.

"So, the signs were always there but the difference now is more teams are being added. Before it was TUT, Sundowns, next thing it's Sundowns, UWC, TS Galaxy, JVW now there are four teams. Now this season there's about seven of us maybe next season something is going to give but there's more teams that are trying to get a healthy position on the log," Sibiya added.
