Sundowns Ladies eyeing a victory in CAF Women’s CL clash against Edo Queens

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies midfielder Oratile Mokwena says the players know what is expected of them when they face a tough Edo Queens in the final group stages match of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League this evening in Morocco.

With Group B still undecided as to who will progress to the last four, both teams will be desperate for maximum points, but the defending champions have three points after two games, while Queens have four.

Anything less than a victory for the South Africans will mean the end of their journey in this year’s competition.

"First of all, we are a group of players that have big hearts and we believe in one another and going into our final [group] game, I believe that we are gonna give everything on the field, knowing that it's very important for us to get maximum three points so that we can qualify for the semi-finals," said Mokwena.

"I'd say the mindset of the players, we are really well focused because we know what is expected from us and we know that we have to be out there and show why we are the defending champions. So, we have to pick ourselves up and go out there and fight."

Mokwena’s sentiments were echoed by Sundowns Ladies coach Jerry Tshabalala who added that they are aware of the strength of the Nigerian team. This will be the first time the two teams meet.

"We are playing against a very, very good side but from our side, we have prepared. We've already started preparing the team in terms of what is expected of them,” Tshabalala said.

“We know for us it's a must-win, the only result that could take us to the semi-finals, is a win, other than that we are packing our bags and we are going home which is something that we are not thinking about, we just wanna go all the way and defend the title."

Sundowns Ladies will be without the injured experienced defender Bambanani Mbane who was withdrawn 15 minutes into their previous match with CBE FC.

In the other Group B match, FC Masar takes on Central Bank of Ethiopia. Kickoff is at 7pm South African time.

Only the top two teams will progress to the semi-finals where AS FAR and TP Mazembe are already waiting.
