The Brazilians head coach Jerry Tshabalala will lead his side in the third edition of this tournament in Korhogo and San Pedro in Ivory Coast from the fifth until the 19th of this month.
Sundowns were dethroned as African champions by AS Far Rabat of Morocco in last year’s final and now Tshabalala says all they want is to get their title back.
"Look, for us as Mamelodi Sundowns, we wanna see ourselves in the final. We just wanna go back there and win the trophy and bring it back home. It doesn't matter who we meet. It could be AS Far, it could be Ampem Darkoa, it could Huracanes but we just wanna go out there and bring the trophy back home," Tshabalala said.
There are six new teams in this year’s tournament from the previous editions with only the defending champions AS Far Rabat and Sundowns Ladies having survived from last year’s tournament.
Tshabalala says this talks to the competitiveness of this tournament.
"When you compare the past two editions with this one, you can tell that the competitiveness is there from the teams.
“Not only from the Southern Regions but all the other six regions of CAF. Why am I say that? You can see that it's not only the same teams that come. It's different teams from different regions.
“When we first started there was a team called Vihiga Queens and now you look you don't have your Vihiga Queens. What I like especially about this is the fact that you'd always have different teams, that shows that the level of women's football has grown."
