Mamelodi Sundowns make most of idle week before Nedbank Cup final

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena says he finally got his wish to squeeze in more training sessions ahead of the Nedbank Cup final.

The Brazilians wrapped up their DStv Premiership campaign last weekend following a 1-0 defeat to Cape Town City.

And, with no midweek commitments, Mokwena believes they’ve had adequate preparation to take on Orlando Pirates in Mbombela tomorrow afternoon.

"I was very excited that we had some training time – I haven't had training time with these players [in a long while], and I enjoyed the last two training sessions, the quality, intensity, and energy," said Mokwena.

"We trained like a team that just lost football match [in the final DStv Premiership fixture against Cape Town City], and I was very happy with the reaction."

Sundowns have been involved in six competitions this season, including two on the continent.

Mokwena revealed that he is usually limited to 10 minutes during training.

"My training sessions this year have been 10 minutes [long], and I've had a stopwatch, but it's a countdown – it counts down from 10 minutes and beeps immediately at the end of 10 minutes, and I was not allowed to go further than that," he detailed.

"This week I've been able to see the players do different things, I've been able to stimulate and try and stress them a little bit more, so that's been the biggest positive in having a neutral week."
