Mamelodi Sundowns now gunning for record 71 points

With the record-extending seventh DStv Premiership title in the bag, South African football kings Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena says they are now going for the record 71 points.

wena was speaking after watching his team humiliate a 10-man Kaizer Chiefs side 5-1 in their backyard at FNB Stadium last night.

This victory took Sundowns to 62 points after 24 matches unbeaten and they clinched their 2023/2024 league title in style.

Under former head coach Pitso Mosimane, the Brazilians achieved a record 71 points back in the 2015/2016 season, and with still 18 points to play for, Mokwena knows that this is achievable.

"The 71 points why not? Why not go for it? It's there, if you get it kudos, if you don't get it unlucky and you try again next time. Why not go for the next target, every mountain is there to be attempted to be climbed and the moment you climb one mountain, you know what I always say about successful people and what I say about success, they look for another mountain to climb. So, why not go for 71 points and breaking that [record] because last season we got to 70 so it's possible, why not," Mokwena said.

But it’s not just the points that the Brazilians are targeting but also finishing the season as the invincibles, going full distance unbeaten.

Mokwena is in the mood of sweeping every accolade that is in front of them now.

"Man plans but God decides so this is where we are. Football is about winning, losing or drawing so you enter the last couple of games with that. I'm happy to see that we play more without the fear of not losing.

“You know we went through a period where our performances were based on not losing games and we had to remind the players that we got so far because we were playing to win games and I'm happy to see that there's a bit of a shift in that in the last four/five games the mentality has shifted a little bit towards that direction."
