Mamelodi Sundowns thrash Golden Arrows in Carling Knockout opener

Mamelodi Sundowns put on a dominant display as they crushed Golden Arrows 5-0 in the first round of the Carling Knockout Cup at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Saturday evening.

Sundowns made some key changes, with Lebohang Maboe stepping in for the injured Themba Zwane.

The hosts were in control from the start, and it took just 14 minutes for Thapelo Morena to break the deadlock with a stunning strike from the edge of the box, following a well-placed pass from Lucas Ribeiro Costa.

The pressure continued to mount on Golden Arrows, and just after the half-hour mark, Sundowns doubled their lead.

Tashreeq Matthews found Iqraam Rayners in the box, and the striker tapped in for a simple finish, making it 2-0.

Golden Arrows' woes deepened when Ryan Moon was forced off with an injury, adding to their struggles.

Despite a few attempts, the visitors failed to trouble Sundowns' goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, with Knox Mutizwa's efforts being the closest.

The second half saw Sundowns continue their dominance.

Mothobi Mvala extended the lead to 3-0 with a powerful header in the 73rd minute, assisted by Thembinkosi Lorch.

Minutes later, Peter Shalulile made it 4-0 with a precise finish, courtesy of another assist from Morena.

Kutlwano Letlhaku completed the rout in the 81st minute, scoring with a left-footed strike to seal Sundowns' commanding 5-0 victory.

This win propels Sundowns into the next round, while Golden Arrows are left to reflect on a dismal performance.
