Man Utd Legend praises Red Devils' Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana amid challenging season

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has praised Andre Onana as one of the rare few standout players for the Red Devils during a torrid 2024/25 season so far.

Ferdinand's comments came after United's latest humiliation - a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper faced significant criticism during the 2023/24 season, as his mistakes often dominated headlines in the English football media.

However, in the midst of a shaky start to the current campaign, Ferdinand believes Onana has truly "stepped up" for his teammates. Reflecting on the loss to Spurs, he noted that United could have easily conceded six or seven goals if not for Onana's performance.

"Do you know who I've got to give a shout out to, who got a lot of stick last season? Onana," Ferdinand stated on his YouTube channel, 'Rio Ferdinand Presents.'

"Without him, it's six or seven today. Onana has been good this season; he's stepped up and made some big saves."

Ferdinand acknowledged that while there have been minor errors, Onana has delivered the level of performance expected of him. "What I expected to see from Onana is what I'm seeing this season," he added.

"He's the only one today who comes out of the game with any sort of credit, any sort of positives. He can walk away with his head high. He won't because he'll be sitting there hurting; he conceded three goals. But he wasn't at fault for any of the goals; he kept us in the game."
