Manqoba Mngqithi wanted more goals in Tshwane Derby

Mamelodi Sundowns began their Betway Premiership title defense with a 2-0 victory over crosstown rivals SuperSport United, and coach Manqoba Mngqithi felt they could have still done more.

Downs scored twice in the second half as strikers Iqraam Rayners, on his league debut, and Lucas Ribeiro found the back of the net.

Mngqithi says their start was shaky, but their confidence grew in the second half, with his only concern the lack of chance conversion.

"SuperSport is one of the stingiest teams in the league, but for our boys to come out the way they did, it was really encouraging. My only concern is that we are probably not ruthless enough," said Mngqithi.

"If you were to check our passing maps, you would see that we are doing a lot of positive things, but when they don't translate into a number of goals, it always causes problems."

The coach added that Matsatsantsa are in fact not much different to their CAF Champions League second preliminary round opponents Mbabane Swallows of eSwatini, whom they beat 4-0 in the first leg last Saturday and host again in the second leg this weekend.

"Even the players said this game is very close to that of Mbabane [Swallows] because they also pose the same threats – very strong on set-pieces and very good on transition, but there's not much play in the midfield," he added.

"So we tried, we could have scored in the first minute. Unfortunately it was not to be, and I think we were not ruthless enough in the first half, which left a scare because it looked like maybe it was going to be a long day [of no scoring].

"But in the second half, I think we improved. Our creative zone became stronger because we saw the space in front of the three centre-backs and behind the two midfielders, which is why we decided to go with a lot of creative players all at once, and it paid off."
