Marumo Gallants go down in first-leg of CAF Confed Cup semifinal in Tanzania

Marumo Gallants have a mountain to climb if they are to reach the Caf Confederation Cup final after going down 2-0 in the first-leg of the semifinal against Young Africans in Tanzania.

The South African club did well in the first half as the teams went into the halftime interval goalless, but the hosts struck twice in the second period for a significant advantage.

Stephane Aziz Ki netted just after the hour mark for the hosts while former Orlando Pirates forward Bernard Morrison came off the bench to put the icing on the scoreline.

Gallants had opportunities to bag an away goal with the biggest chance falling to Katlego Otladisa in the 49th minute but the winger could only hit the side-netting.

Forward Ranga Chivaviro could have added to his tally of five goals in the tournament but wasted two efforts, first seeing a shot saved by home goalkeeper Djigui Diarra and then blasting wide when clean through on goal.

The missed chances would come back to haunt the South African side when the hosts went ahead in the 64th minute as Stephane Aziz Ki fired into the top corner from a cut-back into the box.

The home team then put some gloss on the victory when Morrison doubled the lead in injury-time, beating Gallants shot-stopper Washington Arubi on the second attempt.

Gallants will now have to make up ground in the second-leg that takes place on 17 May at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium if they are to reach the final of the continental competition.
