Mats Hummels joins AS Roma to strengthen defence

Mats Hummels has officially joined AS Roma on a free transfer after leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season.

The 35-year-old German defender signed a one-year deal with the Serie A club after completing his medical in Rome on September 4. Hummels, who will wear the number 15 shirt, brings vast experience to Roma's defence.

During the summer, there was strong interest in Hummels, with Real Sociedad reportedly close to securing his signature.

However, he ultimately chose Roma, becoming part of their busy transfer window that also saw the arrivals of players like Artem Dovbyk and Enzo Le Fee.

Hummels' career has been marked by success in German football, where he won five Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

He was key in Dortmund's 2011 and 2012 title-winning campaigns under Jurgen Klopp and helped Bayern claim three consecutive league titles after rejoining them in 2016.

On the international stage, Hummels earned 70 caps for Germany and was a member of the 2014 World Cup-winning squad.

Now, he aims to use his experience to boost Roma's ambitions in Serie A.
